A good massage is often needed in more ways than one, and the right techniques are used in different aspects. Tense muscles, stress and nagging aches and pains, and other ailments need various techniques to melt the pain away! Here are some of the more common massage therapy techniques.
Longitudinal Gliding. Longitudinal gliding is a very basic but effective massage technique in which pressure is applied in the direction of blood flow. It helps fluid away from the injury or pain site to reduce swelling or inflammation. It is also helpful in relaxing tight muscles and loosening up the tension.
Kneading. Kneading can be performed in various ways and is labeled by the part of the hand used in the process. Thumb kneading, or palm kneading for example. The pressure used will vary according to the type of kneading, and the tissues under treatment. Rhythm and rate of movement are also important as this pressure is applied.
Myofascial release. Myofascial release is a manual technique for stretching the fascia to balance your body out. The fascia is located between the skin and underlying muscle and bone. Injuries, stress, traumas, and bad posture can cause restrictions to this fascia and myofascial release is there to restore restriction to the fascia and benefit the tissue.
Rhythmic Compression. This compression is performed into muscles to create a deep softening effect. It is generally used as a warm-up method for deeper and more specific massage work. Sports massage often use Rhythmic compression to treat and prevent injuries.
Swedish Massage. Swedish massage techniques include long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, vibration, and shaking motions. Swedish massage is a more gentle technique then deep tissue and better suited for relaxation and tension relief.
Deep Tissue Massage. Deep tissue massage is similar to Swedish massage but goes deeper into the muscles and tissue. Deep tissue focuses on knots in the muscles and other specific problem areas in the deeper layers of muscle and tissue using slow strokes or friction across the grain of the muscle. Deep tissue is generally more intense than other forms of massage it shouldn’t have to be painful to be effective.
Hot Stone Massage. Hot stone massage uses warm stones placed on specific points of the body and also warm stones are held by the masseur while massage is performed. The warmth of the stones can loosen tight muscles so the therapist can reach areas of tension quickly and more effectively.
