5 Tips For Relaxing as a Busy Mom

Self-care. What a beautiful word, yet one we so seldom act on! As moms, it’s hard to give ourselves the same attention we give to others. It can feel selfish or wrong to focus on ourselves when others need us. But caring for others is demanding and exhausting, and it’s hard to give when we’re drawing from an empty well. Plus—we deserve to feel good, don’t we?

Add in the holiday stress, and it’s even harder to manage (Read more about managing holiday stress here).

We covered some ways to relax when you’re busy and have a family (how in the WORLD motherhoodare we supposed to manage it all?), but here are some other ways to de-stress, calm down, and ultimately, relax.

Here are five sweet ways to relax when you’re feeling exhausted, frazzled, and at the end of you’re rope. They’re guaranteed to recharge you and get you back to feeling fine again.

  1. Unwind in a Hot Bubble Bath

Shut the door, put on some calming music, and pour yourself a bath with your favorite bath product. Pink grapefruit can help clear the mind, geranium is reputed to soothe emotions, and lavender promotes calm. Bonus points for a book, and extra bonus points for not dropping it in the water as you feel yourself melting in the scented warmth.

  1. Move Your Body

Okay, that might not sound relaxing, but it really is. If grabbing your trainers and going for a run isn’t your style, take a walk around the block or put on your favorite tunes and have an impromptu dance party. Exercise helps you release stress and tension, sleep better, and feel that wonderful endorphin rush.

  1. Meditate

Gaining in popularity, meditation is no longer just for hippies and sages. It can leave you feeling lighter, calmer, and refreshed, and it has the health benefits of lowering your heart rate and lessening stress. Even meditating for a few minutes can leave you feeling lighter, so it’s easy to squeeze into a busy day.

  1. Go Out with the Girls

friendshipLaughter, companionship, and fun are perfect for letting your worries fade away. Grab a friend and go get something sweet to eat, watch that hot new movie, or take a hike or walk in a beautiful area. You can decide if you want to talk about your challenges or have a completely kid-free time.

  1. Indulge in a Massage

Aside from feeling simply amazing, massage is the perfect way to reduce stress and muscle tension. It can also produce feelings of comfort and connection. There are several different techniques to choose from, and some practitioners will even come to you. Massage can also have other benefits, such as reducing anxiety and helping you sleep better.

Remember, to be a great mom, you have to take care of yourself first. The more relaxed and rejuvenated you feel, the more you will have to give to yourself and to the ones who need you.
